Tie knotted abaya

The knotted dress + abaya look is currently so on trend, everywhere I look I seem to see it, well mainly on Pinterest and Instagram. But it is enough to make me want one.

I like the abaya version, I remember the first time I saw it I thought well that's pretty but is it practical, I have seen most girls wear it as a day wearable abaya, as the dress version is a day wear dress. For some reason, the abaya version of this style always looks smarter to me, than the dress version, it could be because of the choice of fabric used. The dress version is usually made in soft jersey or knitted jersey sometimes cotton, you know the casual relaxed looking fabrics, making the outfit look laid back yet very stylish.  Yet the abaya version looks more formal, not that I saying it is a bad thing, I like it. It has a structured feel to it. This could be because we usually see the abaya as a flowy flared garment, however, the knot at the front of this style makes it less flowy I guess, and more tailored. Very chic!

All I know now is that I want to own one. First I want to try and make one with a ready made abaya,  see how it will work to have an extra fabric sewn on that will ultimately be fastened  to become the front knot.  That idea seems ideal and easy.

Then my next step would be to try to design and cut a dress from scratch with the front knot detail. The idea is not so fun lol, but I know it will look awesome when completed.

  1. I've seen this style around and like you I prefer the abaya version. It definitely looks lot more elegant. Have said that I don't think the dress version is supposed to be elegant but more casual. Would love an abaya tho. I think it's like sewing a belt onto a dress but intsead of it being at the back, it's at the front instead. To make it extra special you could have the belt part in a different fabric or same fabric and embellished. I'm getting carried away with my thought lol. I look forward seeing your design Inshallah x

    1. I like your train of thoughts. You are just like me, gets a bit carried away and will then have to calm my self down and go back to the basic idea lol. I like your ideas as well. It is exactly as you've said, it is like sewing a belt on the sides. xx
