Reading No.2

Sisters magazine - the name sums it up; a magazine for sisters run by sisters. It's a beautiful magazine for sisters to gain knowledge and inspiration, all while connecting with other sisters.  Sisters magazine, originally a print magazine, is now a digital magazine available online worldwide.
Undoubtedly, it's an amazing magazine with author Na'ima B Robert as founder and editor-in-chief.

Now, I've been a huge fan of Na'ima B Robert ever since I read her book From My Sister's Lips, a (dare I say it) classic for Muslimahs living in the West, covering topics such as sisterhood, female oppression and misconceptions, and even what it feels like to embrace Islam for reverts. This book has been passed from sister to sister like a rite of passage, so it's safe to say it's one my favourites.

So what exactly am I getting at?

Recently the magazine revealed a campaign: 'To give the gift of sisters'. The idea is to give out 10,000 free published Sisters magazines to sisters through Islamic institutions, in masjid, schools and community centres during Ramadan. This is such an incredible way to spread sisterhood, keeping us connected and bonded. Not to mention in the best month to gain rewards for our deeds.

In my reading no.2, I've brought out my copy of Sisters magazine to flick through and remind myself of my personal connection with it. So how did it all begin?  It was during Ramadan 2014, a typically busy time of the year for Barakah London, and my sister and I had been sewing our Ramadan and Eid abayas. To say that we were feeling slightly stressed is a great way to put it.

It was at this time that we were contacted by the lovely sister Fahima, she told us she was interested in featuring us in  Sisters magazine. I don't know if it was because of the stress of work, but it just didn't register with us that it was Sisters magazine featuring little old us. So just imagine our shock when the magazine was released and we got our copy. Noo way!!  My eyes must be playing tricks on me. Looking back, here are some reflections on this milestone for us. The first magazine we were featured in was a truly inspirational, powerful, positive and most importantly female-oriented magazine for Muslimahs. That was one of our biggest milestones and one that made us feel like we were truly blessed.  We were and are still a pretty small brand, so for us to have a place in this magazine is a blessing, Alhamdulillah.

When I see this campaign now I feel a sense of joy, knowing that it is essential for us sisters to help each other. The bond of sisterhood is not saved for those in our immediate presence but should be shared with all in our ummah. We are sisters, not by blood, but by deen. So just imagine how many sisters will benefit from this good cause! We should never underestimate doing any good at all.

The Prophet said, “Do not disdain any good deed, even your meeting with your brother with a cheerful face.” (Muslim)

So if you want to know how you can participate in this good cause, and sponsor gift copies of SISTERS Magazine to get them into 10,000 homes this Ramadhan please go to this site here
